Custer State Park In South Dakota

Custer State Park is located in South Dakota's Black Hills and covers 73,000 acres. It is named for George A. Custer, who led a scientific army expedition into the Black Hills in 1874. Although they discovered gold on their expedition, Custer was more interested in the area's uncommon natural beauty. A nearly 1,500 bison herd roams the prairie at Custer State Park, you can also see wild burros. Other four-legged hosts include pronghorn, prairie dogs, white-tail and mule deer, elk, and big horn sheep. In higher elevations you should watch for the sure footed mountain goat.
